The Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday accepted interim bail plea of Member National Assembly Rohail Asghar in hit-and-run case.
The counsel for the defendant pleaded before Additional Session Judge Atta Rabbani that the section under which his client was held is bailable and thus his interim bail should be accepted.
Arguing against the stance, the plaintiff’s counsel said that only impoverished people and those living below the poverty line are crushed to death under elites’ cars in this country.
He said that the police did not include serious sections because the accused is an affluent man associated with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz party.
Last year, Asghar had allegedly hit a security guard with his vehicle at a footpath claiming his life. A case was lodged at Kohsar Police Station against the lawmaker by widow of the man, Shaheen Bibi.
On August 10, 2015, Bibi filed a plea in the additional court, stating that the accused was powerful that is why no action was being taken against him.
Judicial Magistrate Humayun Dilawar had issued arrest warrants of the accused and his driver last month after they failed to submit Rs 0.2 million worth of surety bonds.
The defendants’ lawyer explained that the bonds had to be submitted in cash for which the amount was yet to be withdrawn from a bank. He requested the court to grant him time in the matter.
The hearing was adjourned for an indefinite period of time.
