Morai being grilled for links to terrorists, SHC informed

The Sindh Rangers informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday that Nisar Morai, former chairman of the Fisherman Cooperative Society (FCS) and close aid of Sindh’s ruling political elite, was being detained for inquiry for suspected links with terrorists.

Headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, the SHC bench was hearing the petition filed by Seema Morai, wife of detained Nisar Morai, who challenged her spouse’s 90 days preventive detention.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Rangers submitted its reply according to which Morai had been detained for his suspected links with criminals whose offences fall within the ambit of Anti-Terrorism Act. “The interrogation of joint investigation team is under way and its final report is awaited,” the report added. The counsel of paramilitary force requested the court to dismiss the petition, as according to them, it was not maintainable.

Morai is currently in the preventive detention of Rangers how told ATC judge that they had credible information about suspect’s involvement in offences came within the ambit of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

Earlier, the petitioner had submitted that Morai was taken into custody on 10th March this year but he was produced before the administrative judge of ATC six days later. Seema maintained that the detention period from the day of his arrest and the day on which he was produced before the ATC was illegal. It is pertinent to mention here that apart from terror charges, Morai was also wanted to the National Accountability Bureau in money laundering cases and embezzlement charges of millions of rupees.
