It is very painful to witness humiliating behaviour and fanaticism of social bigotry towards the most vulnerable – the transgender community of Pakistan. The recent gunning down of a transgender, Alisha in Peshawar is heartrending and condemnable. She died in LRH because she never received intensive medical attention. Sadly, attitude of hospital administration was shameful and despicable.
Even though the Supreme Court’s directives for identity recognition of the transgender community and help them improving their lives have paid a little. The community still remains at the receiving end of social bigotry. They are considered a stigma on the face of society and even their parents don’t accept them.
Regrettably, incumbent and previous governments have been squandering millions of rupees on different projects but this most vulnerable community has never been on their priority lists. But sadly nobody, including the media is paying heed to the problems the transgender community is faced with.
The government should initiate awareness campaign to educate the masses about this issue. We should accept them as human beings. Where is our Islam now?
