The lawyers of Rangers on Saturday accused former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain of providing medical treatment to terrorists belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Lyari Gang War and al-Qaeda.
During a hearing in Anti Terrorism Court-II (ATC-II) on Saturday, Rangers’ lawyer Sajid Mahboob Shaikh said that Dr Asim used to provide medical treatment to the MQM terrorists. Asim provided medical treatment to 13 terrorists of Lyari Gang War and six members of al-Qaeda, he added.
Dr Asim’s lawyer in his arguments said that his client had denied allegations in his joint investigation team report. He said statement of not a single doctor, providing treatment to terrorists, was available on record.
The Rangers lawyer said that the investigation officer who gathered evidences was changed and the other investigation officer altered the evidences in favour of the suspects. He said Asim Hussain complained of mental stress and he was being provided all kinds of medical facilities.
The hearing of the case has been adjourned till June 18.
In February, the accountability court in a corruption case against Dr Asim had sent him to prison while seeking the investigation report. Apart from terrorists’ facilitation charges, Hussain is also facing an inquiry into huge embezzlement of public funds. On November 30, 2015, the NAB had sought permission from the anti-terrorism court to question the former petroleum minister in graft references. PPP leader Dr Asim was arrested on August 26, 2015, on charges of corruption charges and facilitating terrorists.
