Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government concluded the first phase of registration of seminaries and mosques as part of the National Action Plan (NAP).

NAP was formed by a consensus of political parties in the country after December 16 attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar that killed around 140 people, mostly children.

While addressing a ceremony in Muzaffarabad, Secretary of Religious Affairs Nazirul Hassan Gilani said that the government was implementing the comprehensive plan against terrorism effectively.

According to the latest statistics, he said, 1,150 seminaries are there in ten districts which teach around 45,000 students. Process of registering 450 unregistered institutions is underway, he added.

The secretary said that registration of seminaries was started by the AKJ government before the NAP was put together.

Speakers at the ceremony said that registration would help the government keep an eye on the seminaries on one hand and the level of education would become better on the other. The speakers lauded religious scholars’ efforts to make Kashmir a peaceful area that was free of sectarianism.

Teachers with exceptional performance in their respective seminaries were awarded certificates at the end of the ceremony.
