Pakistan, Afghanistan discuss concerns over peace process after US drone strike

Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz held a meeting Monday (today) with Afghan Ambassador in Islamabad to discuss the situation after May 22 US drone strike in Balochistan that killed Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

According to reports, Sartaj Aziz expressed serious concerns over US drone attacks, stating that Pakistan and Afghanistan should not allow use of its soil against each other.

Both also discussed bilateral ties, border situation and the Afghan reconciliation process.

Pakistan has blamed Washington for scuttling peace efforts with the Afghan Taliban by killing Mullah Mansour in a drone strike in Balochistan’s Naushki area. “The death of Mullah Akhtar Mansoor in a drone strike on May 21 has added to the complexity of the Afghan conflict,” Aziz told reporters at a news conference. “We believe that this action has undermined the Afghan peace process,” he said.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had also condemned the drone strike and claimed that Mansour was not an obstacle to peace talks.
