The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed police officials to provide protection to Ms Basheeran and Shahab-ud-Din who are facing life threats for contracting a marriage of their free will.
Basheeran submitted that she contracted second marriage with Shahab-ud-Din on 30th of April 2016 with her free will after getting divorce from her first husband, Muhammad Saleem.
The petitioner submitted that after her marriage with Shahab-ud-Din, her first husband had lodged a fake FIR against Shahab-ud-Din for kidnapping her.
She added that a local jirga had had declared them “karo-kari”, apprehending that they would be killed in the name of honour. The newly-wed couple requested the court to direct the police to provide them protection.
The SHC bench, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, heard the petition filed by the newly-wed couple seeking protection and quashing of kidnapping case registered against Shahab-ud-Din at a local police station.
The court directed police officials to provide protection to the couple. It also sought comments from the home secretary, provincial advocate general, and prosecutor general on 3rd of June 2016.
