Michelle Obama, only first lady to visit Pakistan Embassy in DC

In a first, United States First Lady Michelle Obama visited the Pakistan Embassy in Washington on Friday.

“It was an absolute delight hosting FLOTUS at Pakistan House today,” Ambassador Jilani said on Twitter.

According to reports, this is the first time a US first lady has paid a visit to the Pakistani Embassy in Washington. During her visit, the first lady discussed bilateral relations with the Pakistani ambassador.

Although the reason behind Michelle Obama’s visit isn’t clear, reports suggest US aid for the education sector of Pakistan was also discussed during the informal meeting.

The First Lady’s visit to the Pakistan Embassy came at a time when relations between Pakistan and the US are strained on account of the drone strike in which Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour was reported killed.

The visit seems a bid to mend strained relations between Washington and Islamabad in the aftermath of a US drone strike deep inside Pakistan on May 21 that killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

While US President Barack Obama insisted that the US will continue to carry out similar strikes wherever necessary.

However, Pakistan termed the attack a severe violation of its sovereignty and integrity, and warned the Obama administration of its implications on mutual ties.
