The Lahore High Court on Wednesday stayed elections of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) Employees Union being held on May 30.

Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi passed the orders while hearing a petition filed by one Shaheen Iqbal challenging elections of SNGPL Employees Union being held on May 30.

The court also sought reply from National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC) member, Registrar of Trade Unions and other respondents till June 23.

Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel Chaudhry Saleem and Malik Ishaq Elahi arguing before the court submitted that according to union constitution, it was mandatory that the election board should be constituted with consultation of outgoing president and general secretary for new elections and got approved from NIRC.

They said that the election board constituted by the out-going president was controversial as the general secretary (petitioner) was not consulted in this regard.

They pleaded the court to set aside elections being held on May 30 by controversial election board and NIRC should be ordered to hold the election.

The court after hearing initial arguments stayed the elections and sought reply from respondents till June 23.
