Fazl wants Zardari, Nawaz to act like the happy lovebirds they are

In a bid to mend relations between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari amid Panama papers revelations, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has met the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman in London, a private news channel reported on Tuesday.

According to the channel, in a three-hour meeting with Zardari on Tuesday, the JUI-F chief tried to persuade the former president not to become a part of the united opposition.

Prior to his meeting with the former president, Fazl had met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday.

Fazl has reportedly urged the PPP co-chairman to meet the premier, who is in London for a ‘medical checkup’, to improve relations between the two leaders.

ZARDARI MISSES NAWAZ TOO:

According to sources, Fazlur Rehman said that Panama Leaks should be investigated but specific persons should not be targeted.

“Every type of corruption should be investigated,” said Fazl.

During the meeting, which was held at the PPP leader’s Park Lane residence, Zardari reassured the JUI-F chief that he would not fall for any conspiracy against democracy.

Zardari reportedly also said that his party would not become a part of any conspiracy of those looking for a shortcut to come into power. Sources disclosed that the meeting between Fazlur Rehman and Asif Zardari lasted around three hours.

However, even after Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s insistence, no final decision was reached regarding a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari.

On Monday, the prime minister nominated six members from the treasury benches for a 12-member committee, which will include an equal number of opposition members to draft joint Terms of Reference (TORs) for an enquiry commission, which would investigate Panama Papers revelations.

Thousands of documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca had revealed that the world’s wealthy and powerful, including three scions of the Nawaz family, among 220 Pakistanis, had secreted away their wealth in offshore holdings in international tax havens.

Last week, Prime Minister Nawaz visited former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in an apparent bid to garner support on Panama Leaks.

The development comes weeks after both PM Nawaz and Zardari came in close proximity in London and reports of their meeting surfaced in the media. However, the PPP leadership denied any chance of a meeting between the two.
