A group of farmers belonging to Pakistan Kissan Ittehad has launched a protest on the Mall on Monday for their demands.
The protest caused a traffic-block as soon as the farmers took over the area. The situation got tensed after travellers entered an argument with the protesters.
The members of Kissan Ittehad have demanded the government to end sales tax on fertilizers and lessen power tariff for water pumps. The protesters have also demanded check on the imposition of prices set by the government for imported crops.
Farmers are of the opinion that those of them who have fertilized arid pieces of land should be given proprietary rights.
The government is further demanded to seek farmers’ recommendations to put together an agricultural policy.
The protesting farmers ended their sit-in on Thursday after the Punjab government assured them of resolution of their problems and fulfilment of their genuine demands, but employees of the Punjab Rural Support Programme (PSRP) continued their protest demonstrations outside the Punjab Assembly as they were left unattended.
