Police have arrested 19 suspects overnight after the targeted killing of two traffic wardens on Saturday.
Law-enforcement agencies arrested nine suspects from Water Pump area after raiding an apartment. Eye witnesses said that one of those arrested had long hair and an assault rifle was also recovered from his possession.
They also recovered a computer. The suspects have been shifted to an unknown location for further interrogation. A traffic police spokesman said that IG Sindh AD Khawaja had suspended SHO of Ayesha Manzil police station. The spokesman said that the wardens killed were not wearing bullet-proof vests.
Police have released the initial post mortem report of the wardens. One warden was shot five times in the neck, chest and abdomen, while another warden had two bullets in his head and neck.
This is the third such incident this year in which traffic wardens have been targeted resulting in the death of five traffic police officers.
Meanwhile, funeral prayers for the two wardens were offered at the Garden Headquarters. It was attended by a large number of police officers and family members of the slain wardens.
It was also attended by DG Rangers Maj Gen Bilal Akbar, Sindh IG AD Khawaja, Additional IG Karachi Mushtaq Mahar and other higher officials.
Later the IG Sindh expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and offered condolences to the family members of the wardens. He said the police would not be intimidated by the cowardly acts of terrorists and it would go to any extent to protect the lives and property of the people. He announced monetary assistance for the legal dependents of the wardens.
