As many as two traffic police officials were shot dead in an armed attack in Karachi’s Ayesha Manzil area on Saturday.

The deceased were equipped with bulletproof jackets but they could not survive the attack as the armed men shot them in the head, according to the Karachi police media cell.

Identified as Shakeel and Kamran of the Azizabad traffic section, both the officials died before arriving at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Following the incident, four suspects were detained from Federal B area’s Nawaz Court residential apartments. They were identified as Maaz, Faisal, Kashif and Nasir. Nasir is said to be the worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s labour division while the rest are supposedly party supporters.

Earlier, Sindh IG AD Khawaja took notice of the incident and directed the DIG West Zone to submit a detailed investigation report. Police officials recovered a spent 9mm casing from the crime scene. The assailants managed to escape.

Earlier in September, a traffic police constable was shot dead while two others sustained bullet wounds in an armed attack in Site-B area of the metropolis. In August, two policemen helping traffic police at the busy Saddar area were gunned down by armed riders when they were asked to stop. Police officials suspect that three militant groups have become ‘active’ in targeting policemen after a lull in such activities.
