The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) yesterday postponed the final phase of Local Government elections in Sindh on high court order.
On May 18, the commission issued the schedule for the elections of mayor and deputy mayor, chairman and vice chairman of metropolitan corporations, district municipal corporations, district councils, municipal committees and town committees in Sindh and fixed June 8 as the date of polling.
The Sindh High Court, hearing petitions of independently elected members of the Shikarpur district council who challenged the allocation of reserved seats to political parties, suspended the ECP notification.
In their plea, independently elected members said that only political parties were eligible to nominate candidates for reserved seats and they had been barred from the entire exercise.
Reacting to the high court’s order, the ECP put off the final phase of local government elections in Sindh for an indefinite period.
The new schedule would be issued soon, it said.
