95% work completed on new Islamabad airport, NA told

State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed apprised the National Assembly (NA) that 95% work on new Islamabad International Airport had already been completed and the necessary machinery was being imported for it.

Replying to various supplementary questions during the question hour, the minister said the building of the new airport had also been completed.

He said there were two airports each in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan including Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot, Skardu and Gilgit Airports.

Both airports in AJK were scaled down since 2008, he added.

Currently, there were no proposals under consideration to construct any new airport in AJK and GB, he added.

To another question, the minister said that abroad properties of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) were purchased during various periods.

Some properties were purchased while some were leased, he added.

He said that Pakistan Airways was a private company limited and set up with Rs 1 billion paid up capital.

Mostly aircrafts would be acquired from private sectors, he added.

To another question, he said that reimbursement of semester/annual fee upto a maximum of Rs 100,000 per annum to children of government employees was made to students of professional education degree programme of medical, engineering, IT, Business Studies, Architecture and D-Pharmacy studying on merit basis in public sector universities, colleges and institutions.

  1. PIA should buy or lease the Airbus A380's. Starting next year, Singapore and Emirates will be finishing their 10 year leases on the first batch of their planes and it would be a good opportunity for PIA to try and get some of them second hand.
