Power shortfall exceeds 3,000 MW

Energy crisis has continued to prevail in the country despite government‘s tall claims as power generation has restricted to 15,000 MW against the demand of 18,000 MW amid ongoing intense heatwave in most parts of the country.

Sources privy to the National Transmission and Despatch Company Limited (NTDC) told that the electricity shortfall had escalated to 3,000 MW. According to new schedule issued by authorities, urban areas would face six hours of power cut while eight hours of load shedding would be carried out in rural areas. The officials have also claimed that no unannounced power outage is being done in any area. The locals would also bear massive outages during Ramzan. Earlier, Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and State Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali assured to eliminate power cut by March 2018.

The ruling party said that work was underway on power generation and laying new transmission lines in addition to upgrading the distribution system.

Meanwhile, the federal ministry for water and power stated that the country was currently facing power shortage of 3,000 megawatt, reported a private TV channel.

The ministry stated that 15,000 megawatt of electricity was being produced in the country while there was a demand of 18,000 megawatt. It was also stated that eight hours of load shedding was being carried out in rural areas whereas six hours of power outages was taking place in the urban areas. However, the areas facing power theft and non-payment of bills are witnessing longer hours of power outages.
