FIR registered against provincial NAB chief, investigator for alleged torture of suspect

A First-Information Report (FIR) was registered against Director General National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahzad Saleem and Investigation Officer (IO) Umair Butt on Tuesday for the alleged torture of a suspect.

NAB Naib Qasid Gul Khitab had allegedly suffered injuries when he was in the custody of the NAB last year. The suspect was arrested by the NAB on May 1, 2015, and the court had remanded him into the bureau’s custody for seven days.

The NAB had alleged that Khitab had received a bribe of Rs 200,000 from a municipal officer, Mahboob Ali, in Abbottabad by impersonating himself as assistant director (investigation) Umair Butt, who was later on investigation officer in his case.

Sardar Ali Raza, lawyer for the petitioner, said his client was severely tortured in custody.

He said when the petitioner was examined at the Police Services Hospital, it was reported that he had bruises on buttocks, legs, shoulder and arms.

The registration of an FIR against the provincial NAB chief and investigator in the case was ordered by the Peshawar High Court last week.

A deputy prosecutor general of the NAB said the allegations of the petitioner were baseless as Khitab wanted to pressure the NAB over his trial for corruption.

He said on the basis of the medical report, it could not be said whether the petitioner had received bruises in the NAB custody or before that.
