Dear Editor,
The developing economy of Pakistan is putting a lot of pressure on the transport sector. The railway sector in particular has been unable to keep its position in the transport sector and the market share of Pakistan Railways has been falling with the passage of time. It has not been properly maintained and developed in Pakistan. Most of the rail accidents in Pakistan are due to outdated and worn-out rail tracks. The defective rail tracks should be replaced on an emergency basis to avoid such accidents. The condition of the railway equipment is also not good. The railway is losing passengers and freight due to a shortage of passenger coaches, freight wagons and the locomotives to handle them.
Pakistan’s railways are under the control of the government of Pakistan; hence it is a department of the government. In order to improve the functioning of Pakistan Railways, the government has decided to allow private investors to operate freight and passenger trains by paying charges to Pakistan Railways for the use of its rail track.
