The execution of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh’s top leader Matti ur Rehman took the centre stage in the 21st session of Punjab Assembly on Wednesday as two separate resolutions were presented in the house to condemn the hanging.
One resolution was presented by Opposition Leader Mian Memood-ur-Rasheed and the other one from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) parliamentary leader Dr Waseem Akhtar. However, the treasury and opposition benches mutually decided to come up with a single joint resolution, which was unanimously approved by the assembly.
The resolution urged the government of Pakistan to raise the issue of hanging of Matti ur Rehman internationally. “The leaders of JI in Bangladesh are being awarded death penalties on the wish of Indian government as they sided with Pakistan during the war of 1971”, the resolution said. The biased tribunal is awarding death penalties on basis of political hatred, the resolution further read.
The house also offered fateha for the soul of the executed JI leader.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPA Faiza Malik distributed sweets among her colleagues over the safe return of Ali Haider Gillani, the son of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani.
The Punjab Agriculture, Food and Drug Authority Ordinance 2016 was presented in the house by Law Minister Rana Sanaullah. According to the ordinance, forensic laboratories would be made in the province to test the pesticides and fertilizers. The law minister also introduced the Punjab Local Government (Fourth Amendment) Bill 2016 during the government business in the session.
In the question answers session, JI Parliamentary Leader Dr Waseem Akhtar was told that there are 211, 407, 245, 58, 23 and 100 shops respectively in the fruit markets of Ravi Road, fruit market of Kaacha Mandi, Multan Road, Singh Pura, Jallo Mandi and fruit market of Raiwind in Lahore. Agriculture Minister Dr Farukh Javaid gave the answers of the queries related to his department.
The session was adjourned till Thursday morning at 10 am. According to the given schedule, the departments of transport, information and culture would come under discussion in the next session.
