Sharmeen Obaid refutes reports of being named in Panama Papers

As soon as news broke about Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s mother being named in Panama Leaks, the  two-time Oscar-winner issued a statement to the media clarifying her position.

The statement was issued on May 9. She said she is not mentioned in Panama Papers and is “neither the legal nor the beneficial owner of any enterprise” named in the document.

Obaid said:

“I fully support ICIJ and the laudable efforts being made by it. Following the information released on the 9th of May, 2016 and contrary to the incorrect reporting, I would, however, like to clarify that in that my name is NOT mentioned in the Panama leaks and I am neither the legal NOR the beneficial owner of any enterprise mentioned in the Panama Papers. There is a mention of my mother, Mrs Saba Obaid (wife of Late S.M. Obaid) and I say with confidence that the off-shore companies mentioned in the Panama Papers as being owned by my mother are compliant with the applicable laws.”
