Thalassemia walk held to raise awareness

International Thalassemia Day with this year’s theme “Access to Safe & Effective Drugs in Thalassemia” was observed across the world on Sunday.

A rally to raise awareness among public about Thalassemia was also held near Numaish Chowrangi area of MA Jinnah Road by Muhammadi Thalassaemia Center Karachi.

Participants have urged citizens to get their blood tested before getting married as it is very important for their children to avoid becoming its victim.

Addressing the participants, Dr Mirza Ishtiaq Baig said that International Thalassemia Day was celebrated worldwide on 8th of May. “This year’s theme highlights the need to support policy decisions that safeguard health and reduce inequalities in the health field.” He said: “Our mission is to ensure equal access to quality health care for all patients, so that they could receive appropriate treatment and drugs free of charge or reimbursed by the government and in concurrence with the guidelines and standards of international experts.”
