Governor Punjab and Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) Chancellor Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana has said that universities should generate new ideas and promote culture of tolerance to take the country forward on the path of progress and prosperity.
Speaking at the 15th convocation of FJWU, Rawalpindi, held at the Jinnah Convention Centre Islamabad, the Punjab governor said that education, especially education of women is indeed the key to prosperity. Laws are necessary, but not sufficient, for countering intolerance in individual attitudes. Rather, true education makes us more understanding, compassionate and generous, he added.
“The development and promotion of education has been a key area for the present government. In this regard universities should emphasise on establishing links between academia, industry and vocational training institutions through a well formulated strategy,” he said. He also appreciated the FJWU’s active links with the national and international universities and research organizations to facilitate young researchers to update their knowledge.
Paying tribute to the martyrs of Pakistan’s Armed Forces in the war against terrorism, Rajwana said: “We are in a state of war for more than one and a half decade.” He said government has taken many measures to provide security to the educational institutions. We are looking forward to provide funds wherever necessary for the security and futuristic projects of the university. FJWU would soon emerge with a truly national character as a research-based university, he added.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor (FJWU) Prof Dr Samina Amin Qadir in her address expressed her gratitude to the Chancellor and Governor Punjab for his presence in the convocation. She said that FJWU is doing its best to provide international exposure to its students and faculty by encouraging participation in international and national conferences.
“FJWU has developed international links and collaborative connections with various international academic organizations, raising the image of Pakistani women in the world,” she added.
Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
