The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Wednesday has imposed ban on the import of Sheesha in the country and ordered the federal government to submit a report in this regard.

A two-member bench of apex court headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed conducted the hearing of the case.

During the course of the hearing Justice Gulzar Ahmed inquired from the prosecutors of the provinces about the measures taken by provincial governments against Sheesha and smoking.

The prosecutor of KP government Mujahid Khan produced a copy of bill passed by KP provincial assembly about the usage of Sheesha before the court and informed the court that KP government has passed a law against Sheesha smoking.

The prosecutors of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan told the court that draft of the bill has been prepared and it would be tabled in the respective assemblies.

The prosecutor of federal government Suhail Mahmud told the apex court that actions were being taken against Sheesha centers.

Justice Gulzar during the hearing remarked that while the law banning Sheesha has come into effect, its supply has not stopped. Therefore, the consumption of Sheesha has increased inside people’s homes.

Justice Gulzar futher remarked that federal and provincial governments should initiate measures to restrict the use of Sheesha among the youth and should also launch awareness campaigns in this regard.

  1. This is not the only Supreme Court Ruling which is worth implementation but it is an irony that there are many more which have just passed over the head of those responsible to implement. Who would ensure and when. the Supreme Court ( or even other courts) orders are honoured and implemented in letter and spirit ?
