Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday has ordered inquiry into Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Farooq Sattar’s coordinator, Aftab Hussain’s death in Ranger’s custody.

General Sharif has ordered to launch an inquiry into the matter and stated that justice should be ensured at all costs. Dr Sattar had demanded the Chief of Army Staff take notice of the incident after MQM alleged Rangers of Hussain’s extra-judicial killing.

Meanwhile, Rangers have suspended officials suspected of involvement in Ahmed’s death.

Aftab, 42, who had been working as Sattar’s coordinator since 2002, was taken into custody from his Federal B Area residence two days before his death. The paramilitary force had acquired 90-day remand of the suspect a day before he was admitted to a hospital.

A high-level investigation committee has also been formed on the directions of Sindh DG Rangers to probe the death of Dr Sattar’s aide. The committee will be headed by a sector commander-designate of Sindh Rangers and will ensure that the truth about the incident is brought to light, the press release added.

While the Rangers said Aftab Ahmed Hussain died of cardiac arrest, the MQM alleged their man was tortured during interrogation which led to his death.

Senior MLO Dr Kaleem said that reason of Hussain’s death was concealed over judicial orders. The final autopsy report will take more than a week.

A statement issued by Rangers said the accused complained of chest pain early in the morning and was taken to hospital where he died of a heart attack.

The Rangers spokesperson said Aftab was arrested over his involvement in different criminal cases on May 1. No details of the cases were shared.

The MQM, however, termed the death a murder and demanded that the authorities conduct an inquiry of the extrajudicial killing. The party has also announced a countrywide day of mourning for today (Wednesday).

MQM Convener Nadeem Nusrat rejected the Rangers claim that Aftab died of a heart attack, contending he was tortured to death.

In a statement issued from London, he requested the prime minister, chief justice, Karachi corps commander and army chief to order an impartial judicial investigation. The inquiry report should be made public within a week, he added.

Nusrat said MQM workers had died in the custody of law enforcement agencies previously as well but no action had been taken against them. He also accused the Rangers of kicking out doctors and staff from the morgue to tamper with the post-mortem report.

Aftab, father of five, joined the MQM in 1990. His funeral was held at Numaish Chowrangi, where a large number of workers gathered to offer prayers.

  1. Countless undertrials have died in Police custody. Did anyone care ? It is graceful for the CAOS and the DG to take notice and promised action if anyone found guilty. Matter of fact, MQM should not manufacturer those thousands of criminals who are out on the streets of this hostage city of Karachi and for three decades. Rangers have seldom arrested anyone without ensuring on the basis of intillegence report. And when arrested, one has to go in the process of introgation. And introgation does not mean serving a toast only. Even the Americans use those methods to extracts facts including water-boarding. Political parties should think twice before manufacturing criminals for their own purposes instead of politicizing the incidents.

  2. When the father lies and kills his own children then no body can catch him.
Govt is killing it’s country’s civilians then only the probe from outside can help. Like UNO etc.

  3. This is topy drama after all the uproar in media.
Justice will not be done. There were and are lot more extra judicial killings in Baluchistan than Karachi WHAT HAPPENED THERE.
Faces were distorted beyond recognition and our forces are getting the hats off recognition. This is what Pakistan is.
If proven guilty at least compensation for the family, life sentence for the culprits or capital punishment.

  4. Knowing you Army Chief there will be no justice as Aftab was a Mohajir. The litmus test will be death penalty carried out for the rangers who killed aftab. Since the Rangers were Punjabi they will be off the hook. I challenge you General Raheel as a Punjabi to execute one of your army men and one of your punjabi clan for having tortured to death a mohajir. Sentencing is not enough, execution will be the ultimate test we await rhetoric to action being carried out. As an East Punjabi I am sure of what I say.

    • Very biased and disgraceful comment Aisha. It is not Punjabi, East or west, issue. Investigation is a process to extract the facts. And none, specially hardned criminals, will accept unless used other methods. MQM has killed dozens in their own Torture House. They even had kidnapped a serving Army Major, Major Kaleem, to their torture house in Landhi and subjected him to torture. Previously, target killers were arrested from the house of Dr Farooq Sattar who used to travel in his Official vehicle. It is a very complex issue. They simply politicise anything.

  5. I agree with you Aisha- we should see what justice General Raheel has to have carried out. If he fails to have them executed I do not see General Raheel anymore as my leader and cannot give Bayah to him at all.

  6. I fully agree with Aisha and Asim despite being a punjabi. There is a different rule applied for Urdu speaking to label them as traitors and discriminate as well as persecute while a different rule applied for non Urdu speaking. Take the example of Gen Asim Salim Bajwa who said cases were registered against Altaf Hussain for mocking the army and having Dr Danish's program on ARY taken off the air. Yet when Imran Khan said things against the Army like generals loosing their urine or even Khwaja Asif inside a meeting that was televised, that was not treason. Nawaz Sharif said also that only a line was drawn and India was divded otherwise nothing, having shot the two nation theory in the can. These people have all committed treason yet nothing is done against them cause they are not Urdu speaking kindly note.

No more now will people from Punjab even stand this oppression and injustice as its now even within the province of Punjab this discrimination that has to go otherwise the nation will rot and burn in hell. Already the US is not wanting to give F-16's? Why? They don't want to deal with Pakistan now as its an embarassment to their administration since its a nation governed by an army that talks from two corners of its mouth. It claims to be an Islamic army doing justice and agaisnt Israel yet does the same thing that the zionist army does i.e. Pakistani occupies Karachi, persecuting and prosecuting its citizens as if they are inferior while the zionists kill Palestenians.

    • Not quite Faisal. It is not a issue of Punjabi or Urdu speaking. Broadly, a criminal is a criminal and should be dealt with similarly. If it were not so, Mumtaz Qadri would not have been executed. Those talking Punjabi or Urdu speaking or Sindhi speaking, are simply twisting the fact. No criminal would agree of having commiting the crime – and easily. Even very civilized agencies use those methods to extract facts like even the US.
