PCB announces selection of new head coach but refuses to reveal identity

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan said on Tuesday that they have decided on the name of the new head coach but refused to reveal the name to the media.

“We have finalised the new head coach but I cannot tell you his name,” said Shaharyar. “He can be a local candidate or a foreigner.”

He added: “We will name the coach within two days after due consultation. Everyone has forwarded his opinion during the meeting.”

The PCB placed the matter of hiring the head coach in front of the Board of Governors in an important meeting on Tuesday where they decided via a vote whether the board should hire a foreign or local coach.

“The matter of selecting a head coach will be put in front of the BoG members to take their opinion whether to hire a foreign coach or local one,” said PCB official.

“We want to take everyone’s consent before making a decision on the subject. PCB will also give weightage to what Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja suggest.”

Earlier, former head coach Waqar Younis stepped down from his post on April 4.

“I am resigning as the head coach of Pakistan cricket team,” said Waqar while addressing the media outside PCB headquarters. “I am stepping away with a heavy heart. I want to thank everyone with whom I have worked honestly for the last 19 months. I tried my best to help all the players become better versions of themselves.”

The 44-year-old then reiterated his stance that PCB was wrong in leaking his confidential report to the media, while adding that his dues should be invested in the development of the Pakistani domestic structure.

“I request the players, former and current, to take care of Pakistan cricket,” said Waqar. “My services will always be available for the country. Meanwhile, I have three months left till the expiry of my contract. I would request the PCB to invest remaining five to six millions rupees due to me into domestic cricket which lack sponsors.”

Waqar, in his performance report submitted to the PCB’s Fact-Finding committee after the 2016 World T20, said that former T20I captain Shahid Afridi was ‘non-serious’ during the Asia Cup and World T20 campaigns.

He also criticised former selector Moin Khan for giving favours to right-hand batsman Umar Akmal.
