The International Labour Day-2016 is being observed today (Sunday) across the globe including Pakistan under the theme “Celebrating the international labour movement”.

The Labour day aims to pay tribute to workers’ sacrifices in achieving economic and social rights all over the world.

Seminars will be held in different cities to pay tributes to those who laid down their lives in Chicago in 1886 for the rights of the labourers.

Labour unions throughout Pakistan would celebrate and organise seminars, rallies and parades where union leaders would deliver speeches emphasising the history of Labour Day and its importance.

Pakistan’s first labour policy was devised in 1972, in which May 1 was declared an official public holiday which also formulated the creation of the Social Security Network, Old Age Benefit Schemes and Workers Welfare Fund.

Pakistan’s constitution also contains various provisions and articles about labour rights.

President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the government believed in the dignity of labour and is committed to providing workers better working conditions.

In their separate messages on the occasion of Labour Day, they said the Government is resolved to provide better housing, medical and education facilities to the workforce.
