Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan has directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to ensure proper supply of drinking water to locals during the summer season.

He also instructed KWSB officials to take action against theft of water from supply lines with the help of the local police.

Karachi Commissioner Syed Asif Haider Shah, KWSB Managing Director Misbah-ud-din Farid, Additional IG Mushtaq Mehar and Deputy Commissioner East Asif Jan Siddiqui attended the meeting.

The governor also directed for repair and replacement of dilapidated lines to control line losses. KWSB should chalk out a viable strategy regarding the issue as according to the forecast it is estimated that this summer would be quite hot, he added.

Ebad further directed that free water tank service should be made more effective and immediate action should be taken against tanker service providers profiteering from the situation.

He said that with the completion of the K-IV water project, sufficient water supply would be witnessed. Hence, KW&SB must plan a comprehensive strategy for the distribution after the project’s completion, he added.

Misbah uddin Farid informed the governor that the board is managing 11 hydrants in the city whereas last year they were managing 24.

KW&SB has closed down 190 illegal hydrants operating in Karachi. Moreover, the operating hours of the hydrant has been reduced to 12 from 24 hours, he added.

Farid informed that only 3% of total supply of water to Karachi is from water tankers. While the main users of water tankers are industries and the residents of Defense Housing Authority, he added.
