A Pakistan-based leader of the Afghan Taliban has died at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, a report in an Urdu daily said on Friday.

Abdullah Gull Rayan, a spiritual leader of the Afghan Taliban, had been admitted at the hospital for cancer treatment, the report said.

Gull was running a madrassa in Quetta from where several fighters had joined Mullah Omar in Taliban’s fight against United States and NATO forces.

It was Gull’s second visit to Shaukat Khanum, the only proper cancer hospital in Pakistan, as disclosed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan last year.

Abdullah Gull lived a quite life. His name came to light after Imran Khan said in a talkshow that he had come to know about the treatment of an Afghan Taliban leader in his hospital when he received a letter from them, thanking him for treating one of their leaders.

The report about Gull’s death, however, could not be verified by the hospital administration, government or Taliban spokesperson, the paper said.
