Parents and teachers have expressed serious concern over non-availability of electricity connections, water supply and other basic facilities like washrooms at ten government schools in the vicinity of Pakistan Steel Mills—Pipri and Shah Town areas.
Students, especially toddlers, are at high risk of falling ill because of the scorching heat which is expected to rise in the coming day, the parents fear.
During his visit to some of these schools including Government Boys Primary School at Sabu Goth, GBP School Roiddin Baloch at Rabnawaz Goth, GBP School at Mari Goth and GBP School Haji Umeed Ali at Jabli Goth, an APP correspondent found out that the students and teachers were facing difficulties as they had to pass the academic hours in such a harsh environment.
A teacher from Government Boys Primary School in Sabu Goth (Pipri) told that five students at the school fainted because of heat and suffocation on Saturday. There was no electricity or water supply at the school since it was established 15 years ago. It also lacked washrooms and compound wall, the teacher informed.
The parents from the above-mentioned areas regretted that in the absence of wash-rooms the students have no option but to use outdoor toilets which is a security threat to them along with the danger of unhygienic environment. Most of these schools do not even have compound walls for security.
The students and teachers questioned the education authorities and the Sindh government for their negligence in this regard and demanded the resolution of the issue on priority basis and the provision of all basic facilities to the schools. They said that Sindh Education Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has recently announced the provision of missing facilities to the schools, adding that these were mere announcements and they were never implemented. .
