Death toll from the consumption of toxic confection has claimed two more lives while under treatment in Civil Hospital Faisalabad taking the tally to 22.

Resident of Tehsil Kahror Lal Eisen’s Chak-105 TDA Umar Hayat brought sweetmeats from a local shop located at chowk-111 to celebrate birth of his grandson on Thursday.

The confectionery items turned out to be poisonous and claimed ten lives the same day within hours while over 40 were shifted to Multan’s Nishtar Hospital and Layyah’s District Headquarters Hospital.

The two killed on Sunday are 11-year-old Farhan and 15-year-old Adnan.

Medics have foreboded that the toll is likely to rise as another five of the same family are in critical condition in the hospital.

Police while launching an investigation in the matter has arrested the shop’s owner Tariq Mehmood, his brother and servant.

Four-day remand of the suspects has also been granted who have confessed of mixing the toxic in the sweets accidentally.

On the other hand, doctors state that the toxic urea has no antidote due to which the condition of the people has become critical.
