‘Army officials’ sacking a message to politicians’

Pakistan Army has set an example by initiating accountability from its own institution to give a message to political leaders, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s only MNA from Lahore, Shafqat Mehmood said on Thursday.

He was talking to Pakistan Today Arif Nizami in his talkshow DNA on Channel 24.

Shafqat Mehmood said that now Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif must immediately write a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan for the formation of a judicial commission to probe the Panama Leaks.

He claimed that a debate has started in the Sharif family as to who would take over the party’s helm as the apparent heir Maryam Nawaz’s name has also featured in the Panama revelations.

To a question about the rifts between Jahangir Tareen and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Mehmood said that the PTI is in process of conducting its intra-party elections and such difference of opinion among leaders was natural and a part of the political process.

Arif Nizami revealed that he has information that the sacking of these senior army commanders did not happen all of a sudden as the process of accountability within the army was initiated a long time ago.

He was of the view that on one hand the army talks about accountability across the board, but on the other hand former dictator Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf is living a lavish life abroad despite the fact that he is charged with treason.

According to Nizami, the sacking of army officers would increase the pressure on the civilian government to announce the judicial commission under the supervision of Chief Justice of Pakistan.
