A resolution has been moved in the Punjab assembly to make it mandatory for the female newscasters to cover their heads with hijab (head scarf) while they are on-air.

The resolution was moved by Madiha Rana, a ruling party MNA. Rana stated in her resolution that hijab is among the moral values practiced in the country.

The resolution presented by Rana read that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) must be restricted to confine the female news casters to wear hijab while they presenting news.

During the regime of ex-martial law administrator Zia ul Haq, a similar order was passed and the female newscasters of PTV were made to wear head scarf. Mehtab Akbar Rashdi, a female news caster of PTV, at that time, defied the orders and preferred to quit her job.
