The Sindh education and literacy department has handed over appointment letters to monitoring assistants recruited for regular monitoring of schools.

Under the directorate of monitoring and evaluation at every district, monitoring system has been put in place including chief monitoring officers and assistant monitors to monitor schools using the mobile application Sindh Schools Monitoring System, said a statement issued on Wednesday.

The application has been designed to take teachers’ attendance through biometric verification, school census captured by taking pictures of the facilities within a school and the students’ enrollment.

The data collected through the application is synchronised with the education and literacy department database and weekly or monthly reports are shared with the department for corrective measures.

Speaking on the occasion, Senior Minister for Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said that fingers were pointed at lack of management in the education system, and their indicators looked bad because of the low quality of education with teacher absenteeism being the major problem resulting in low enrollment rate and high dropout rates.

“That is why we came up with the biometric system which is directly linked to the payroll. We separated the teaching staff from the administrative staff and hence hired these monitors to further strengthen monitoring of schools.”

He further said that each monitor would have the responsibility to report about 120 schools and the monitors had been provided the facility of motorcycles with a tracking system which would ensure that the monitors were fulfilling their jobs with maximum output.

In his welcome speech, DG Monitoring and Evaluation Akram Ali Khuwaja said that these monitors would play a vital role in improving the quality of primary, secondary and higher secondary education by extensive monitoring at the grass-root level throughout the province.

The monitors will usher a new era in the education and literacy department. The ceremony was a hallmark of commitment by the government of Sindh to provide quality education which was a new beginning to enhance the monitoring system of the department across Sindh.

Under Sindh Education Reform Program-II and Sindh Global Partnership for Education, a monitoring and evaluation wing was set up in the education department to carry the said function. Through this endeavour of Sindh School Monitoring System, students’ enrollment and teachers’ presence will be ensured.

The event was attended by education department officials, UNICEF and World Bank representatives, educationists and media personnel.

Special Secretary Education Alia Shahid, Chief Programme Manager Reform Support Unit Faisal Ahmed Uqaili, Head of Curriculum Wing Dr Fouzia Khan, World Bank representatives Umbreen Arif and Shafiq Paracha were also present.
