Panama Papers – and our maturity

At last, the ruling PML-N government, after getting perturbed by the situation erupted after Panama papers leaks, has resorted to consultations with other political parties. For instance, Finance Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar on Friday informed the senate they are in contact with Swiss authorities to get access to the money stashed in Swiss banks by Pakistanis. In the continued fallout after the release of Panama papers, PM Nawaz Sharif faced a barrage of questions over revelations that his three children – Maryam, Hussain and Hassan – had set up offshore companies abroad. But I have no hope that the handful rich, involved in holding offshore accounts, would ever be taken to task by anyone in Pakistan. Bigwigs of this country does not want to bring the ‘big fish’, involved in Panama leaks, to book in order to ensure no one would ever dare make such an attempt in future as they have addicted to habits of corruption. The issue of Panama leaks should not be politicized. If any relevant institution is serious to take the issue to its logical end, there should be a transparent probe into the matter. The government must not resort to stubbornness and come forward to sort out the issue. The question is where we stand as a nation. Is it not a fact that we, the Pakistanis exercise our right of franchise in favour of ineligible people that don’t deliver and enter in power corridors just to save their own skins and personal gains? During elections we use our right of vote for the dishonest to get facilitated with extra favours. Aren’t we myopic people that again and again take in by these so-called politicians who during electioneering seem very pious and polite but as soon as they enter into the power corridors, they forget their all promises including hollow manifestoes. Till the time we think for our country as a whole, the situation will not improve. We will have to think collectively which at the end facilitate all of us.
