Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences staffer, who allegedly raped a 22-year old girl under treatment at the Intensive Care Unit on Saturday, was wanted for a similar crime earlier, police said.

Past records of the accused Krishan Kumar collected by the police state that a rape case was registered against him at the Margalla Police Station earlier.

An FIR has been registered against Kumar at the Karachi Company Police Station.

Hospital sources said that the male nurse had committed the rape act the night between Saturday and Sunday. However officials at PIMS tried to brush the incident under the carpet until news reached the media.

The hospital then came out clean, suspended the staffer and launched an inquiry on Monday. The girl from Swat was seeking treatment at the hospital for the last one month, a PIMS spokesperson said.

Taking notice of the incident, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif formed an inquiry team, headed by Col (retd) Saifuddin, which dismissed an initial medical report, calling PIMS administration’s decision of informing police with a considerable delay by two days a ‘criminal negligence.’

The team said a strict action will be taken against the culprits. It also ordered DNA and medical tests of the victim again.

Police officials termed the delay in reporting the incident as tantamount to assisting the culprit to escape and loss of crucial evidence.

In the absence of medical evidence, a rape case is difficult to solve as the only evidence the court has is circumstantial: the word of the rapist against that of the victim.

  1. I know it's very heartbroken news but as a reader I wanted to give solution "Hospital staff should install a CCTV camera on ICU" under the security management that scared them as they feel someone is watching them 24 hours. May ALLAH give her justice/
