As many as 1,800 retired employees of Town Municipal Administration (TMA) Rawal Town Rawalpindi have voiced strong protest over non-payment of pensions for the last five months despite release of funds by the Punjab government.

The retired employees said that the Punjab government released funds amounting to Rs27.5 millions for payment of their pension two weeks ago and directives had been issued for releasing pending salaries. They said that the accounts office was not paying on the pretext that the funds have not be drawn from the bank.

“We were low paid government employees and the amount of pension being paid to us is already meagre. Due to non-payment of pension shop keepers have refused to provide us even essential commodities and food items on credit,” Aslam, one of the pensioners said.

Municipal labour workers union has started consultations to evolve a strategy for staging protest rally in front of the accounts office if pensions were not released.
