Dr Asim files bail plea in ATC

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain’s lawyers on Saturday submitted a bail plea in the anti-terrorism court (ATC) in facilitating terrorists case.

The plea stated that the accused had neither treated nor sheltered terrorists at his hospital and he was being politically victimised. Dr Asim informed the court that DSP Altaf Hussain had already declared him innocent. A class report was also presented in this regard.

Meanwhile, the accountability court ordered to provide medical facilities to Dr Asim in a private hospital. Earlier, while advancing his arguments, defence lawyer told the court that his client was mentally ill. His memory was getting weak day by day, he added.

He said doctors had recommended physiotherapy for him but the facility was not available at Jinnah Hospital. The accused chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, Dr Asim was, arrested on Aug 26 last year during the ongoing Karachi operation. A close aide to former president Asif Ali Zardari, Dr Asim has been accused of money laundering and unfair distribution of natural gas quotas as the federal petroleum minister. He is also being investigated for suspected ‘terror financing’ and offering treatment to suspected criminals at his health facilities.
