Says those involved in financial irregularities should be tried under the Anti-terrorism Act
Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Senator Sirajul Haq has said that after the allegations of concealment of wealth, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should step down unless a high powered commission headed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court exonerates him.
Talking to media after a ceremony at Jamia Qasimul Uloom, Sargodha, on Thursday, he said that the prime minister of Iceland had set a model for others by resigning from his high office.
Sirajul Haq said that corruption was a global phenomenon and international laws were required to control the menace. He said that on the one hand, armed terrorists were shedding the blood of innocent people while on the other, corrupt rulers were sucking the blood of the general public through high taxes and economic and political terrorism. He said that those involved in economic exploitation should be tried under the Anti-terrorism Act.
The JI chief said that while the ruling elite, both from the ruling party and the Opposition, were plundering public money and their private businesses in the country and abroad were flourishing, the masses were groaning under the price hikes and high taxes. Millions of young men were running from pillar to post in search of jobs but in vain, Siraj said.
He said that the estimated annual corruption in the country was around Rs 4,380 billion and if it was checked, the country could dispense with the IMF and World Bank loans.
