Man thrashed for not chanting ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’

A 20-year-old courier was seriously injured after he was thrashed by a group of students on the campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT).

According to media report, the students assaulted Imtiyaz Ahmad Sheikh, who is working with a local courier company, for refusing to chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai. He received serious arm and head injuries. Imtiyaz told media men that a group of non-local students stopped and beat him as he refused to obey them. Imtiyaz had gone to the NIT to deliver a parcel.

“They stopped me and asked to stand on a chair and chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. When I refused, they hit me with a cricket bat and broken glass,” he said, adding that he fell unconscious and opened his eyes in a hospital. The boy said he visited the Nigeen Police Station after being discharged from the hospital to register a complaint. “Although the SHO assured me that he would register an FIR yet he refused to give me a copy. I think police want to hush up the case,” he said.
