The Lahore High Court on Monday reserved verdict on a petition filed by MNA Javed Latif challenging the Election Commission’s proceedings on an application against him.
The single bench comprising Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan heard the petition.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel arguing before the court submitted that the commission had issued notices to his client on an application filed by a voter, Sarfraz, seeking directions for his disqualification on the basis of fake degree.
The counsel pointed out that the Azad Kashmir Supreme Court had already given its verdict in the matter; therefore, the commission could not proceed on the application. He pleaded the court to set aside proceedings initiated by the commission.
However, respondent voter’s counsel Mian Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri opposed the request submitting that the petitioner had obtained his BA degree from Azad Jammu & Kashmir University through impersonation.
He contended that the petitioner did not qualify as per conditions set in Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution and it was the reason that his client had approached the commission. He pleaded the court to dismiss the plea.
The court after hearing arguments of both parties reserved verdict on the plea.
