PAT activists stage sit-in outside ATC

Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)’s women wing held protest demonstration and a sit-in outside Anti-Terrorists Court (ATC) on Friday.

Hundreds of women made a human chain and raised slogans against the government. The protesters were carrying placards and pictures of the women killed in the Model Town incident.

The demonstration started at 8 AM when one of the women injured in the Model Town incident, Amina Batool, came to record her statement before the court. In her statement Amina said that on June 17, 2014, Inspector Malik Hussain of the Punjab police opened fire on the women workers of PAT and one of those bullets hit her on the foot.

She further said that a bullet fired by SP Abdul Raheem Sherazi hit the face of Rimsha Latif and she fell on the ground instantly. She stated that the police were even stopping them from picking up the injured.

She said that Punjab police committed brutality and nobody was there to stop them even though the happenings were being showed by the media.

The second witness Abdul Qayyum in his statement said that SP Umar Virk fired indiscriminately on the PAT workers and he continued to do so for some time. In front of me, a bullet fired by Umar Virk hit one of the PAT workers, Khawer Naveed, in the head and he was shifted to the hospital but he succumbed to his injuries. He said Umar Virk was shouting in rage and also ordered his personal gunmen to fire on the PAT workers.

After the court proceeding, the PAT lawyer Rai Bashir Ahmed while talking to media, said that PAT Chairman Dr. Tahirul Qadri had vowed to never give up the fight for justice. We will not let anything deter us from seeking justice through the courts of law, he said.

He said the struggle for justice will continue until the culprits are punished and sent to the gallows. Advocates Naeemuddin Ch, Sardar Ghanzanfer Hussain, Ch Imtiaz, Farzand Mushaddi, Shakilo Mamka and other lawyers were also present. The case was adjourned till April 4.
