Pakistan arrests 59 Indian fishermen over territorial violation

Pakistan has arrested 59 Indian fishermen for violating the territorial waters of the country, its Maritime Security Agency (MSA) said Thursday.

The Indian fishermen were arrested near Sir Creek area and will be handed over to the docks police for legal action. MSA also captured 10 boats belonging to the fishermen.

Pakistan frequently releases Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture.

Two batches containing 86 fishermen each have been freed this month. The first batch was released on March 6 whereas the second was set free on March 20.

Both Indian and Pakistani fishermen are frequently detained on the charge, as the two countries’ borders are not clearly defined in the Arabian Sea and many fishing boats lack the technology needed to be certain of their precise location.

Many are sent to jail before being handed over to the authorities in their homeland.
