Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Saturday the PPP is the only party that cares about the farmers of Pakistan, adding that the people were with his party and together they would fight cruel landlords and politicians.
Addressing a massive public rally in Sadiqabad here, Bilawal said that “PPP’s founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the first person who raised the slogan that the people were the centre of power, and his party had been with the masses since”.
He however regretted that whoever stood for the poor in Pakistan was killed, and remarked that “the oppressed is not weak; it is the oppressor who is weak”.
Coming down hard on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the PPP head said that the chief of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz cared about Indian farmers more than he cared about the farming community in Pakistan.
He also questioned as to what benefits Sharif-led government gave to the poor through its “so-called agricultural package” for the farmers, arguing that the farming community in South Punjab lacked adequate resources while cultivators in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were facing the same problem.
“Not only has Mian Sahib shattered the dreams of a prosperous future for the farmers, but he also failed to deliver on all fronts, Bilawal went on to say as he criticised the Orange Line train project in Lahore and rampant corruption in the country.
About the scourge of terrorism, Bilawal said the PPP was the only party which raised a strong voice against terrorists. “By killing Benazir Bhutto, the last supporter of the poor was snatched away from the masses. There are many who talk (about terrorism), but only a Bhutto can lay down their life for the people of Pakistan,” he remarked.
The PPP chief further said that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto rebelled for the poor and was sentenced to death just for advising the people to unite against those dividing them for their vested gains. “Bhutto never wanted a divided Pakistan, for the rich and the poor,” he added.
Referring to his slain mother Benazir Bhutto, Bilawal said that she picked up the flag of her father after he was no more and continued fighting for the rights of the poor. “Despite being a woman, Benazir confronted all elements of oppression and rebelled against the system,” he added.
Addressing the people in front of him, the PPP chief said that Bhutto’s grandson held his flag now and vowed “he will never abandon them”.
