Holi public holiday

Holi, the festival of colours, that is celebrated by Hindu around the globe particularly in South Asia, is declared as a public holiday by the government of Sindh. However, this praiseworthy act is being condemned by my countrymen who are highlighting that this is ‘Islamic Republic of Pakistan’. To my dismay, the same individuals appreciated the acceptance of the petition for Eid holiday in US, a ‘secular’ state. Being an Islamic state is no excuse to restrain the minorities to practise their religion or enjoy a day-off on their religious festivals.

I am citing a hadith that answers all the doubts: “Beware! Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-Muslim minority, or curtails their rights, or takes anything from them against their free will; I (Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)) will complain against the person on the Day of Judgment.” (Abu Dawood). The Hindu community can commemorate Holi with sheer happiness. It is, indeed, an excellent step taken by the government.

  1. With due respect, I am not an opponent of Holi holiday for Hindus but not as a public holiday . In US the two Eid's are given holidays for muslims and not a general public holiday, please read here: http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/eid-al-fit

In Canada also in some organizations they have announced two extra day off's for muslim's to commemorate those two days, but not as general public holiday. Sindh govt. has nothing good to do but to give such extra holidays to already under developed and most corrupt province.
