79 perish, over 100 injured in torrential rains: NDMA

At least 79 people died while 101 were injured during the recent rains in the country, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said.

Providing details, NDMA said, 10 persons died in Punjab, 19 in Balochistan, 10 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 22 in FATA and 11 in AJK. Another seven died in a coal mine incident in Orakzai Agency.

At least seven persons were killed and six others were injured in rain-related incidents in different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, bringing the toll to 36.

The authority said 240 houses have also been damaged due to rains since March 9. These include 50 houses in Balochistan, 77 in KP, 36 in FATA, four in Punjab and 73 in AJK.

Two persons died while four were injured when roof of a house collapsed in Chamkani area of Peshawar.

In another incident, a man was killed and two others were injured when roof of their house caved in in the Tangi area in district Charsadda.

Four persons of a family were killed when the roof of their house collapsed in the Buchiana area of Tehsil Jaranwala in Faisalabad.

The Met Office has forecast rain-thundershower at isolated places in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mardan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Lahore, upper FATA, Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan and the Potohar region.

The Met Office has also predicted land sliding in Malakand, Hazara divisions, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

PACKAGE FOR RAIN AFFECTEES:

Parliamentary leader of Awami National Party (ANP) Sardar Hussain Babak Sunday demanded the provincial government to announce special package for rain affected people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sardar Hussain Babak, in a statement issued from the ANP Secretariat, said that KP government should initiate operations on emergency basis for the safety of people from rain and flood.

He said that dozens of people have been killed and injured and a lot of houses and crops were destroyed due to heavy rains.

He demanded the PTI led provincial government to announce a special package and provide relief to the people.
