As many as 439 Pakistanis are imprisoned in Indian jails whose citizenship has been verified.

According to an official document, steps for release of these prisoners will be initiated after the Pakistan government shares the information about their citizenship with the Pakistani mission in India.

The mission will formally send a request to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs for immediate release and repatriation of the prisoners whose citizenship has been verified, details the document, adding that if the request for release of any prisoner is not considered, the Indian authorities will then start legal proceedings against him/her.

The document further says that the mission makes arrangements for legal assistance of Pakistani prisoners, and immediately facilitates those prisoners for repatriation who have completed their sentence or those who have been released by the Indian authorities.

Reportedly, of the 439 Pakistanis languishing in Indian jails, 22 are imprisoned in Amritsar.
