I can wax philosophic about the coverage that the Peshawar bus bomb blast of the 16th received on the national media, but I would like to show you a graphic instead and let you be the judge. There are times when raw data explains more than what rhetorical flourishes can.
A Facebook group called Justice For Pashtuns, already in the news and mentioned in the parliament for its incisive, data-driven commentary on the CPEC project, selected the 9 o’clock news bulletin – because it is TV “prime time” and because this bulletin has traditionally served as the “round up” of the day’s news – and analysed the placement of the blast news item on the various bulletins.
Keep in mind, this is the day of the blast itself.
News coverage is not a zero-sum game. It’s not an either-or. Both can be covered and both were covered. It is only the prioritisation that is being discussed.
You might think this was a case of the story being slowly receding to the end of the bulletin as they day went on (though how slow was this trajectory, given it is the same day?) But some channels’ noon bulletins actually showed the “curtain-raiser” of the then upcoming match before the blast story.
Again, as promised initially, not going to expand too much on it. Either you get it or you don’t. But: if even in-your-face events like bomb blasts can’t hold mainstream Pakistan’s attention for several hours, what hope is there for the coverage of the misery of the millions (yes, millions) of IDPs currently living in despondency away from their homes?
