Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has said if former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has been granted concession on humanitarian grounds, such flexibility should be shown to all other prisoners in future.
Talking to Pakistan Today Editor Arif Nizami during his talkshow DNA on Channel 24 on Thursday, Aitzaz said the retired general ridiculed the country’s judiciary as he did not even show up before the courts in some cases and kept trying to evade justice on one pretext or the other.
The PPP leader wondered as to when the time would come when powerful individuals would also be made to face the courts. “Supreme Court’s verdict allowing Pervez Musharraf to go abroad for treatment is a lesson for all as to how powerful individuals manage to get things done in their favour,” he went on to say.
The PPP senator said the former president, who was standing a trial for high treason, reserved a seat on a foreign flight immediately after the court’s decision when he could not even board a domestic flight to Lahore, Quetta or Karachi for appearance before the courts.
To a question, Aitzaz said his party had succeeded in keeping the former strongman in Pakistan but the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz weakened the case and now took him off the Exit Control List (ECL) under pressure. “It is quite possible that Musharraf may never return to Pakistan to face the pending cases once he leaves Pakistan,” he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Supreme Court ordered removal of Pervez Musharraf’s name from the ECL, paving the way for him to travel abroad.
Mr Aitzaz why did the PPP government gave him Guard of honor and why did your government did a deal with Mush?
Again. Not shameful ?
