Man strangles daughter in suspected case of honour killing

A young woman was strangled to death by her father on Wednesday in Shahdara area of the provincial capital, in what police suspects to be a case of honour killing.

Shahdara SHO Arham said 23-year-old Mehwish, resident of Nain Sukh Colony in Lahore, had married against the will of her father a year ago. Since then, she was living with her husband Anees.

The police official said the girl’s father, identified as Sher Ali, was annoyed with her. “He didn’t attend the girl’s wedding and had barred her from visiting his house.”

But on Tuesday night Mehwish had a dispute with her husband and came to her father’s house seeking an apology, said the police official.

“The father at the time didn’t respond to her apologies but allowed her to stay the night at his house.”

Next morning, Ali allegedly strangled his daughter to death over a trivial matter, police said, and later fled the scene. He is still at large.

The Shahdara police shifted the girl’s dead body to a morgue for autopsy and also registered a case.

“We are conducting raids at different places to arrest the suspect,” said the SHO.
