Implementation of pro-women law joint responsibility of govt and people: minister

Provincial Minister for Population Welfare and Environment Protection Begum Zakia Shahnawaz has said that Protection of Women against Violence Act is a historic step taken by the Punjab government which will help control the incidents of violence against women. She said that 15 per cent quota for women in jobs, share in heritance and their protection at socio-economic and legal level is a welcome step by the Punjab government.

She expressed these views while addressing a seminar regarding Protection of Women against Violence Act at Government College University, today. The provincial minister said that we have to give equal status to women and restore their confidence and self-respect in the society.

She said that implementation of this law is the joint responsibility of the government and the people adding that the law would ensure safety of women and girls of the country.

Zakia Shahnawaz, appreciating the political, socio-economic and literary services of Government College University, asked the students to serve the country and work for the welfare of people living in backward areas. She stressed the need for individual and collective efforts for the success of the law.

Later, Adviser to Chief Minister Salman Sufi, giving a briefing regarding Protection of Women against Violence Act, said that protection of life, property and respect of women is the responsibility of the state and it is discharging it efficiently. He said that government wants to provide justice to every woman at her doorstep for which a strategy is being evolved. The seminar was attended by Prof. Hassan Ameer Shah, teachers and a large number of male and female students.
